Clan Buchanan traces its origins to lands on the eastern shore of Loch Lomond, said to have been granted around 1225 by the Earl of Lennox to a churchman, Absalon, in gratitude for services rendered. Clan tradition also claims earlier descent from an Irish prince who aided Malcolm II against Danish raiders. The Buchanans rose to prominence during the Wars of Independence, supporting Robert the Bruce, and later intermarried with the royal Stewart line, echoed in their coat of arms' resemblance to the Royal Arms of Scotland
