The Carmichael name comes from lands in Lanarkshire granted to the family in the late 14th century, though earlier Carmichaels are recorded holding lordship in the area from the 1220s. As close allies of the powerful Douglas family, Carmichaels fought beside them at Otterburn in 1388, and later generations were divided by the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, with brothers reportedly fighting on opposing sides at the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644. A separate West Highland branch, rendered in Gaelic as Mac Gillemichael, became associated with the Stewarts of Appin as a distinct kin group
