£27.00The Agnews of Galloway trace their constableship of Lochnaw Castle to a charter of 1426, and by 1451 the family held the hereditary sheriffdom of Wigtownshire, a position their descendants retained for centuries as Douglas power in the region declined. Their origins are debated: one tradition holds they came from Larne in Ulster by way of a Norman family named Agneaux, while another, more speculative theory links them to the Lordship of the Isles through a shared ancestor with the O'Gnimh family of Ireland. The clan's best-known Jacobite-era figure, Sir Andrew Agnew, commanded government forces defending Blair Castle against a besieging Jacobite force in 1746
