The name comes from the lands of Ayton, the town on the river Eye in Berwickshire. It appears in Border charters from about 1166 onwards. The castle at Ayton is said to have been founded by a Norman, de Vescy, whose family afterwards took the name de Eitun, though this descent remains unproven
