£31.00The Arbuthnot name is territorial, taken from the lands of Arbuthnott in Kincardineshire, on Scotland's northeast coast near the mouth of the Bervie Water. Tradition holds the lands passed by marriage from the Olifard (Oliphant) family to Hugh de Swinton in the late 12th century, whose son adopted the Arbuthnott surname; his descendants have held the same ground for more than eight centuries, a rare continuity among Lowland families. The family became prominent lairds of the Mearns, and in the 15th century a member was implicated in the killing of a royal sheriff following a bitter local dispute
