About Clan Borthwick

Clan Borthwick's name is territorial, tied to the Borthwick Water in Roxburghshire; a traditional (and unverifiable) origin story credits a Livonian knight named Andreas who arrived in Scotland in 1067. Sir William Borthwick rose to prominence in Midlothian and the Borders, receiving a charter to the lands of Borthwick around 1410, and the family became Lords of Parliament in the 15th century. Their castle, built in 1430 for Sir William Borthwick, is among the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Scotland and remained in family hands until the death of the 9th Lord Borthwick in the late 17th century
