About Clan Boyle

Clan Boyle traces its name to the Norman town of Beuville near Caen, France. David de Boivil appears as a witness to a Scottish charter in 1164, and by 1275 Richard de Boyville held the lands of Kelburn in what is now North Ayrshire. The family rose through parliamentary and government service: David Boyle sat for Bute in the Parliament of Scotland from 1689, was made Lord Boyle of Kelburn in 1699 and Earl of Glasgow in 1703, and was then one of the Scottish commissioners who negotiated the 1707 Treaty of Union
