About Clan Brodie
Clan Brodie's origins are uncertain, with theories connecting the name either to the ancient Pictish royal line of Brude or to the Gaelic word for a mire or ditch. The family is first recorded in 1311, when Michael de Brothie received a charter from Robert the Bruce converting the old thaneage of Brodie, near Forres in Moray, into a barony. During the Wars of the Three Kingdoms the Brodies were committed Covenanters, and Brodie Castle was burned by Lord Lewis Gordon's forces in 1645; much of the clan's early records were lost in the fire
