£16.00Clan Buchan takes its name from the district of Buchan in Aberdeenshire, distinct from the unrelated Clan Buchanan. The ancient Earldom of Buchan was long held by the Comyn family, whose Earl John Comyn (died 1308) opposed Robert the Bruce and was ultimately crushed when Bruce's forces harried Buchan in 1308 to break Comyn support in the north; the earldom later passed through other families and came by marriage to the Erskines in the 17th century, with whom it sits today. Separately, the Buchan clan chiefship descends through the Buchans of Auchmacoy near Ellon, who received a royal charter for their lands from James IV in 1503 and remained loyal supporters of the Stuart cause, including Thomas Buchan, who became commander-in-chief of the Jacobite forces in Scotland after Killiecrankie in 1689
