About Clan Byres

In Scotland the Byres name is chiefly associated with the lands of Byres near Haddington in East Lothian, where Byres Castle, now a ruin, stood. These lands gave their name to the Lindsay title Lord Lindsay of the Byres, created in 1445 and still held as a subsidiary title by the Earl of Lindsay. Independently, the name also took root among burgh families: John Byres of Coates (1569-1629), an Edinburgh merchant and banker, served as the town's Treasurer, Old (deputy) Provost and Dean of Guild, and Byers Close on the Royal Mile is named after him
