About Clan Clelland

The Clelland (or Cleland) family takes its name from the lands of Cleland in the parish of Bothwell, Lanarkshire. Tradition holds that founding figure Alexander Kneland married a sister of William Wallace, and that his son James fought alongside Wallace at Stirling Bridge and Falkirk before being rewarded with land after Bannockburn. The family gained further standing in 1360 when a Clelland became Castellan of Edinburgh Castle
