Cockburn
£16.00£20.00A Border family whose surname had appeared by the early 13th century, taken from a place called Cockburn, possibly near Duns in Berwickshire. Piers de Cockburn and Thomas de Cockburn appear on the Ragman Roll of 1296, the record of Scots who swore fealty to Edward I of England. The family's Langton branch rose to prominence when Sir Alexander Cockburn married the Norman heiress Mariota de Vipont around 1330, and the family came to hold the baronies of Langton near Duns, Bolton near Haddington and Carriden in Linlithgowshire; his son Alexander, second of Langton, became Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland
