About Clan Crawford

Clan Crawford is a Lowland family whose name comes from the Barony of Crawford in Lanarkshire, with roots likely among Anglo-Norman settlers who arrived in Scotland during the reign of Malcolm III. Sir Hugh Crawford, who served as Sheriff of Ayr in the 13th century and held the lordship of Loudoun, is one of the clan's best-documented early chiefs; the Loudoun estates later passed by marriage first to the Loudoun family and eventually to the Campbells. Tradition also connects the Crawfords to Scotland's national hero William Wallace, whose mother is said to have been a Crawford of the Loudoun line
