About Clan Crichton

The family took its name from the lands of Crichton in Midlothian, south-east of Edinburgh. Crichton Castle was built as their home; John de Crichton built its oldest part. The family rose to national prominence in the 15th century through Sir William Crichton, Chancellor of Scotland, who was involved in organizing the notorious 1440 'Black Dinner' at Edinburgh Castle
