£30.00The name comes from the lands of Dunlop in the Cunninghame district of Ayrshire and is thought to derive from the Gaelic Dùn Lob, 'fort of the hill or bend'. The traditional seat was Dunlop Castle, also known as Hunthall, near the village of Dunlop; it is said to have been built by the family in the 13th century and no longer stands. Notable bearers of the name include Lieutenant General James Wallace Dunlop (1759-1832), who served during the Napoleonic Wars; John Boyd Dunlop, credited with inventing the pneumatic tyre; and Sir Ernest 'Weary' Dunlop, the celebrated Australian surgeon and prisoner-of-war doctor of the Second World War
