£30.00Clan Fleming descends from Flemish settlers, with a leader named Baldwin granted lands at Biggar in Lanarkshire by David I in the twelfth century; Baldwin later became Sheriff of Lanark under Malcolm IV. Sir Robert Fleming was one of the first to join Robert the Bruce after 1306, and Sir Malcolm Fleming of Cumbernauld, foster-father of the young David II, was created Earl of Wigtown by the king after his return from France in 1341. A later Sir Malcolm Fleming was beheaded at Edinburgh in 1440 alongside the young Earl of Douglas and his brother, and John, 2nd Lord Fleming, Lord Chamberlain of Scotland, was assassinated in 1524
