£35.00Gow, from the Gaelic 'gobha' meaning smith, is an occupational surname rather than an independent clan; it is usually listed as a sept, or associated family, of Clan Macpherson within the wider Clan Chattan confederation, and within the clan it is treated as synonymous with the surname Smith. Tradition connects the name to a Perth smith remembered as 'Gow Crom', the crooked smith, who is said to have volunteered to take the place of a sick man on the Clan Chattan side, identified in some accounts as Macphersons, at the Battle of the North Inch in Perth in 1396, a staged combat between rival Highland kindreds. Some older sources instead link the Gows to Clan Mackintosh, recording that they took Mackintosh's protection in 1399, which reflects some disagreement among historians about the family's earliest allegiance
