£20.00£26.00Clan Gunn claims descent from Norse settlers, with tradition tracing the founding line to Gunni, grandson of the Orkney warrior Sweyn Asleifsson, whose marriage into a family descended from St Ragnvald linked the clan to the Norse Earls of Orkney. Centred on Caithness and Sutherland in Scotland's far north, the Gunns reached the height of their power in the thirteenth century, holding strongholds such as Dirlot, Clyth, and Halberry, none of which survive today. In the fifteenth century, chief George Gunn served as hereditary crowner (coroner) of Caithness and became embroiled in a long, violent feud with Clan Keith, marked by the bloody 'Battle of Champions' at St Tayre chapel; the feud was not formally ended until 1978
