£16.00The Guthrie name comes from the barony of Guthrie in Angus, one of the older family names in that county, though its deeper roots are debated between a territorial origin and a supposed link to a 9th-century Scandinavian prince. The family's rise is closely tied to Sir David Guthrie, who served as royal armour-bearer, Lord Treasurer of Scotland, and Lord Chief Justice in the later 15th century, and who built Guthrie Castle under royal charter in 1468. Guthries fought and died at Flodden in 1513, and the Covenanter minister James Guthrie was executed in 1661 for opposing royal religious policy
