About Clan Keith

The Keith chiefs held the hereditary office of Marischal of Scotland, later Earl Marischal, charged with the king's safety in Parliament and with keeping the royal regalia. According to John Barbour's poem The Brus, Sir Robert Keith led the Scottish horsemen against the English archers at Bannockburn in 1314, and Bruce later confirmed the hereditary office of Marischal to the family by charter. About 1458 James II created Sir William Keith the 1st Earl Marischal, and the 5th Earl Marischal founded Marischal College in Aberdeen in 1593
