About Clan Kerr

By family tradition the Kerrs descend from two brothers, Ralph and Robert (also called John), who came to Roxburgh from Lancashire; their lines became the rival Kerrs of Ferniehurst and Cessford. Descendants of both houses served as Wardens of the Middle March, policing the central Border, yet the two families were long in bitter conflict with each other, and the Kerrs also feuded with neighbours such as the Scotts. The Cessford Kerrs eventually became Dukes of Roxburghe, while the Ferniehirst line rose to become Marquesses of Lothian; today the Marquess of Lothian is recognised as chief of Clan Kerr, with Ferniehirst Castle near Jedburgh, first built in 1476, as the clan's historic seat
