£30.00The Learmonths were a landed family of Fife first noted among supporters of Malcolm III according to the sixteenth-century chronicler Hector Boece, though verifiable records begin around 1400 with the lairds of Earlston. By the sixteenth century the family held Dairsie and Clatto, and, after James Learmonth of Dairsie purchased it in 1526, Balcomie Castle near Crail. James Learmonth served as Master of Household to James V and as a diplomat to England before dying at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh in 1547
