£16.00Clan Leslie traces its name to Bartolf, a Hungarian nobleman said to have come to Scotland in 1067 and built a castle called Leslie in Aberdeenshire's Garioch district; a colourful legend credits him with coining the motto 'Grip Fast' while helping a queen across a swollen river. The family's senior line became Earls of Rothes in the mid-15th century, a title that has carried the clan chiefship ever since. Leslies suffered heavy losses at the Battle of Harlaw in 1411, and later generations achieved renown abroad, including General Alexander Leslie, who commanded Covenanter forces after a career in the Swedish army, and Walter Leslie, who became an Imperial Field Marshal in the Holy Roman Empire
