About Clan Maitland
Clan Maitland traces its origins to the Norman family of Mautalent, first recorded in Scotland through Thomas de Matulant, ancestor of the Lauderdale line. His descendant Sir Richard Matulant was a powerful Lowland baron holding Thirlestane and other lands, and supported Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn in 1314; two of his sons later died fighting at Neville's Cross in 1346. The family's fortunes centered on Thirlestane Castle in the Borders, and in the seventeenth century the head of the family was created Viscount, then Earl, of Lauderdale
