About Clan Melville

The name comes from the barony of Maleville in Normandy. In the reign of David I the family received lands in Midlothian, which were named Melville after them; Melville Castle is their ancestral seat, though the present castle was rebuilt by the unrelated Dundas family. Galfrid de Maleville was sheriff of Edinburgh Castle under Malcolm IV and is traditionally named Justiciary under William the Lion
