£16.00The name comes from the barony of Moncreiffe in Perthshire, from the Gaelic for 'hill of the sacred bough'. Matthew Muncrephe received a charter for lands in Perthshire from Alexander II in 1248, and the family rose to local prominence over the following centuries; Sir John Moncreiffe, the ninth laird, was killed at the Battle of Flodden in 1513, and in 1544 the family supported Clan Ruthven in a feud against Clan Charteris in Perth. Sir John Moncreiffe, the twelfth laird, was created a Baronet of Nova Scotia in 1626
