About Clan Montgomery
The Montgomerys trace their Scottish origins to Robert de Montgomerie, a Norman-descended landholder granted the estate of Eaglesham in Renfrewshire during the reign of David I in the 12th century, his family having earlier held the castle of Sainte-Foy-de-Montgommery in Normandy. Eaglesham remained the clan's base for generations before its chiefly line rose further through marriage into the Earldom of Eglinton in Ayrshire. The family's best-remembered medieval exploit came at the Battle of Otterburn in 1388, when Sir John Montgomery of Eaglesham captured the English commander Henry 'Hotspur' Percy; the ransom he received reportedly funded the building of Polnoon Castle
