£27.00The Nairn name is territorial, taken from the town of Nairn on the Moray Firth, about 17 miles east of Inverness. The burgh was probably founded late in the twelfth century, by William the Lion around 1200, together with a castle that has long since vanished, and it first appears in records as Invernairn in the reign of Alexander II (1214-49). The similar name Nairne was borne by a Perthshire family: Sir Robert Nairne of Strathord was created Lord Nairne by Charles II in 1681, and the songwriter Carolina Oliphant, author of 'Will ye no come back again?', became Lady Nairne by marriage
