About Clan Nicolson

Two unrelated clans share the name: the Lowland Clan Nicolson, whose chief's motto is Generositate, and the Highland Clan MacNeacail, centred for centuries in Trotternish on Skye. The Highland MacNicols are recorded in Trotternish by the early 16th century, and an old pedigree claims descent from Norse princes, a claim historians treat with caution. Their chiefs were long known as Nicolson of Scorrybreac, from their lands near Portree, which remained the clan's seat until the last chief of that line left Skye in 1825; his descendants settled in New South Wales, Australia
