About Clan Sempill
Clan Sempill is a Lowland Scottish clan rooted in Renfrewshire, with the name recorded there since at least the twelfth century, though its exact meaning is uncertain. The family rose through royal service during the Wars of Independence, when Robert the Bruce rewarded descendants of Robert de Semple with lands near Largs and Longniddry. Sir John Sempill was created Lord Sempill by James IV around 1489 and later founded a collegiate church at Lochwinnoch before dying at Flodden in 1513
