About Clan Smith
Smith is an occupational surname - the English equivalent of the Gaelic Mac a' Ghobhainn, 'son of the smith' - rather than the name of an independent clan with its own chief and territory. Black's Surnames of Scotland notes that the smith, as maker of arms and armour, was an important figure in a clan, and because the craft passed from father to son it became a surname; in Gaelic areas it also appears as Gow and MacGowan. The Clan Chattan Association lists Smith, Gow and MacGowan among the septs of Clan Macpherson, and a legend links a Perth smith to Clan Chattan's side at the North Inch combat of 1396
