About Clan Strange
Clan Strange is a Lowland clan whose surname probably derives from the Norman-French word for 'foreign'; the Scots form Strang is believed to come from the word 'strong'. The family is recorded serving the Scottish crown from the mid-13th century, and by 1362 John Strang had acquired the Balcaskie estate in Fife through marriage, which the family held for over two centuries. A Strang of Balcaskie was killed at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh in 1547, and a cadet branch that settled in Orkney later produced Sir Robert Strange, a celebrated engraver who served in Bonnie Prince Charlie's Life Guard during the 1745 Jacobite Rising and survived Culloden
