£33.00Tennant is a Scottish Lowland surname derived from the Old French and Middle English word for a tenant or land-occupier, first associated with tenant farmers in the Stirling, Perthshire and Fife lowlands under the feudal system introduced by David I. The name is most closely tied to the Tennant family of Glenconner in Ochiltree, Ayrshire, friends of the poet Robert Burns, from whom descended the pioneering industrial chemist Charles Tennant (1768-1838). Tennant has no clan chief recognised by the Lord Lyon and functions today as a family name with an associated tartan and clan society rather than a chiefly Highland clan.
