About Clan Tennant

Tennant is a Scottish Lowland surname generally explained as a status name from the Old French and Middle English word for a tenant, one who held land from an overlord; variants include Tennent. The name is most closely tied to the Tennant family of Glenconner in Ayrshire, friends of the poet Robert Burns, who addressed an epistle to James Tennant of Glenconner. From this family came the pioneering industrial chemist Charles Tennant (1768-1838), who patented a bleaching powder in 1799 and founded the St Rollox works in Glasgow; his descendants became baronets and Barons Glenconner
