About Clan Turnbull
Clan Turnbull is a Scottish Borders clan whose origin is told through the legend of William of Rule, who is said to have saved Robert the Bruce from a charging wild bull around 1315, earning the name 'Turnebull' and a grant of land near Philiphaugh. The Turnbulls became known as one of the most turbulent of the Border reiving families, holding strongholds including Bedrule Castle, Fatlips Castle, Barnhills Tower and Fulton Tower across Roxburghshire and Selkirkshire. Their lawlessness drew royal attention: in 1510, while James IV held a justice court at Jedburgh, some two hundred Turnbulls are recorded submitting to him with halters around their necks, and some were imprisoned or punished
