About Clan Wemyss
Clan Wemyss takes its name from the Scottish Gaelic 'uaimh' (cave), referring to caves on the Fife coast near the family's seat, which also contain rare Pictish carvings. The Wemyss chiefs are unusual among Scottish clans in descending in an unbroken male line from the Celtic Earls of Fife (Clan MacDuff), and by the 18th century were recognized as senior representatives of that ancient earldom. Sir Michael Wemyss played a diplomatic role in Scottish royal history, helping fetch the child Queen Margaret, 'Maid of Norway,' from Norway in 1290, before switching allegiance from Edward I to Robert the Bruce, a decision that led the English to sack Wemyss Castle
