About this tartan

Clan Gordon originated in the Berwickshire parish of Gordon in the Scottish Borders during the twelfth century, when Richer de Gordun held the barony there, before the family's fortunes shifted decisively north to Aberdeenshire. Sir Adam de Gordon, a supporter of Robert the Bruce, was granted the lordship of Strathbogie in the early fourteenth century, and when the direct male line ended in 1402, the chiefship passed by marriage into the Seton family, whose descendants took the Gordon name and later became Earls, then Marquesses, of Huntly. The Gordons became one of the most powerful Highland forces, remembered as 'Cock o' the North,' though the 4th Earl's ambitions collided fatally with the crown at the Battle of Corrichie in 1562
