Clan Graham is documented in Scotland from the early twelfth century, when William de Graham appears in charters during the reign of David I; a colourful but less reliable tradition instead credits an early Graham with breaching the Roman Antonine Wall. The family gained standing in Celtic Scotland by marrying into the princely house of Strathearn and built Mugdock Castle north of Glasgow around 1370. Sir John de Graham, one of William Wallace's most trusted lieutenants, was killed fighting at the Battle of Falkirk in 1298
