Clan Grant descends from an Anglo-Norman family bearing the name le Grand ("the great" or "the tall"), first recorded in Scotland in the 13th century when Sir Laurence le Grant served as Sheriff of Inverness and the family acquired lands at Stratherrick. Over subsequent centuries the Grants became one of the leading Highland clans of Strathspey, extending into Glen Urquhart and Glenmoriston along the Great Glen. Their rallying cry, "Craig Elachie," names a rocky hill above Aviemore that served as a signal point for gathering clansmen in times of danger
