About this tartan

Clan Hepburn takes its name from a place associated with a high burial mound, possibly linked to Hepburn Bastle in Northumberland before the family established itself in East Lothian by the thirteenth century. Sir Patrick Hepburn acquired the lands of Hailes in the late fourteenth century, and his descendants, created Lords Hailes in 1453 and Earls of Bothwell in 1488, rose to become one of Scotland's most powerful noble families, holding offices including High Admiral of Scotland and Lord of Orkney. Patrick, 2nd Earl of Bothwell, and his son Adam were both killed at Flodden in 1513
