About this tartan

Clan Hunter descends from a Norman family said to have arrived in Scotland in the 12th century, receiving the lands of Hunterston in Ayrshire from King David I. The clan's hereditary role as Royal Huntsman, along with its historic charter, is commemorated by a still-observed tradition in which the Laird of Hunterston keeps ceremonial silver pennies in case a reigning monarch should ever visit to collect the token feudal rent specified in a 1374 charter. The Hunters also served as Hereditary Keepers of the Royal Forests of Arran and Little Cumbrae
