About this tartan

Clan Keith held one of medieval Scotland's most prestigious hereditary offices, that of Marischal -- later Earl Marischal -- responsible for guarding the royal regalia and protecting the monarch in Parliament. Robert the Bruce is said to have confirmed the office on the Keiths after Sir Robert Keith led a cavalry charge at Bannockburn in 1314, and in 1458 the title was elevated to Earl Marischal. The fifth Earl Marischal founded Marischal College in Aberdeen in 1593
