Some sources trace it to the Irish Ó Ceallaigh, tied to the Kings of Uí Maine in Ulster, while others connect the Scottish spelling to place names such as Kelloe (Berwickshire/Durham) or Kellah (Northumberland), with early record-holders such as William de Kellaw appearing as a royal official under Alexander III in the 1270s. A distinct Galloway and Wigtownshire family, the Mackellies, held lands under the Earldom of Kellie in connection with Clan Erskine
