About this tartan

Clan Little was one of the recognized riding clans of the Scottish Border Marches, named in the 1587 Act of the Scots Parliament listing surnames with chiefs in the West March. Descriptively named from the Latin 'parvus' (little/small), the family's first identifiable chief was Simon Lytil, Laird of Meikledale, on record from 1469. Like other Border families, the Littles took part in the reiving culture of raiding and counter-raiding that dominated Anglo-Scottish border life between the 13th and early 17th centuries, before the 1603 Union of the Crowns brought crackdowns that scattered many riding families to Ulster and beyond
