The MacBeans, or MacBains, descend from Gillichattan Mor and form a historic sept of the Clan Chattan confederation, with a name likely derived from Gaelic 'Beathan,' meaning life. The clan's traditional territory centered on the parish of Dores near Inverness, with related branches in Strathnairn and Strathdearn, and the family fought alongside Clan Chattan at the Battle of Harlaw in 1411, suffering heavy losses. Their most celebrated figure is Major Gillies MacBean, who died fighting heroically at the Battle of Culloden in 1746
