Clan MacKinnon belongs to the Siol Alpin grouping of clans that trace descent from Kenneth MacAlpin, Scotland's traditional first king, through the clan's namesake, a 12th-century warrior called Fionnghuin. Based historically on Skye and Mull in the Inner Hebrides, a branch of the family served for generations as hereditary abbots of Iona, a role that ended around 1500. MacKinnons on Arran are said to have sheltered Robert the Bruce during his years as a fugitive, and after Bannockburn the clan was rewarded with lands on Skye
