About this tartan
Clan MacLaine of Lochbuie is a Highland clan tracing descent from the same Anglo-Norman Fitzgerald lineage that produced Clan Maclean, through the 13th-century warrior Gillean of the Battle-Axe. The clan received lands on the Isle of Mull around 1350 from John, Lord of the Isles, and built Moy Castle at Lochbuie as its stronghold; territory later extended to Scarba, Jura, Morvern and Tiree. The distinctive 'MacLaine' spelling was adopted by the 8th chief in the 17th century to distinguish the family from the related Macleans of Duart
