About this tartan

Clan MacMillan's name is generally traced to a Gaelic nickname for a tonsured cleric, reflecting traditions linking the clan's founders to the early Celtic church centered on Iona, with a Hebridean prince's descendants said to have worn the distinctive tonsure of St John. The clan is first solidly documented in Knapdale, Argyll, in the 14th century under a charter from the Lord of the Isles. When the Lordship of the Isles was broken up around 1500, the MacMillans gave their allegiance to the Camerons of Lochiel, while other branches spread south into Kintyre, Arran, and the southwest, eventually establishing a separate and prosperous Galloway line
