Clan MacTavish traces its identity to Tavis the Great, said to have taken lands in Cowal and Knapdale, Argyll, in the twelfth century, giving the clan its name (from the Gaelic 'son of Thomas'). Long serving as hereditary sheriffs of Knapdale from their seat at Dunardry, the MacTavishes became closely, and sometimes uneasily, entangled with their powerful Campbell neighbors. Sympathetic to the Jacobite cause, the clan suffered after the 1745 rising: a chief's son was imprisoned for his loyalty to the Stuarts, and in the aftermath of Culloden many MacTavishes anglicized their name to Thompson, with some later folded into Clan Campbell's sept lists
