About this tartan

Clan Matheson takes its Gaelic name, Clann Mhathain, most likely from a word meaning 'son of the bear,' reflected in the two bears supporting the chief's coat of arms. Settled by the Celtic Earls of Ross around Loch Alsh, Lochcarron, and Kintail, the Mathesons fought alongside the Earls against Norse incursions and later served the Lords of the Isles, fielding a reported two thousand men at the Battle of Harlaw in 1411. A Matheson constable died defending Eilean Donan Castle during a siege in 1539
